Every once in a while, something wild will inspire you, will shake and move you in such a way that you can only select to discover it further. You seek to question it, upside-down-it, try to inside-out-it, spend your leftover hours, blissfully confused by it. This could be a pseudo emotion, misplaced anger, possible bliss. It could be a tragic color, a dead or dying ficus, a flightless bird. It could be another artist’s depressingly brilliant work, shaming you into becoming more than what you are, or the sound of words that when strung together, break your heart. It could be the strangeness of hearing your own laughter in the dark…

For me personally the inspiration is the discovery, as a result of the process. The process is not just making the work but being able to document emotion inside of this private and eremitic space.

Regarding the work, I seek to advance in my technique, improving the application of my stroke, the complete understanding of how a certain pigment translates between surfaces, this is a comfort to me. A certain magic exists in the process of acquiring this kind of understanding for your craft. The inspiration is daring to sacrifice whatever it takes, to discover even more and the drive to discover more, is motivated by those little, seemingly insignificant, a-ha victories. These become the most treasured collection of solitary, ‘halcyon tracks’ you quietly celebrate with a little half smile at no one.
